Mentorship is at the heart of SUHF. It happens every day when bright, enthusiastic, strong and resilient participants at various stages of their academic and professional careers come together to make a difference in the community. This continues not just during the 6 weeks of the program but for years to come. The work is hard but the kinship and connection that develops among the students and the communities they work in is the reward that inspires future generations of leaders to continue the work of fighting for social justice. For in justice, is health.

Fellows have the opportunity to shadow physicians at several safety net clinical sites affiliated with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, including Lomita Family Health Center (Harbor-UCLA Medical center), Wilmington Health Center (a community clinic) and Gardena High School clinic ( a school based clinic)
Goals of the preceptorship is to help students understand the critical role primary care physicians play in building long term relationships with their patients and their families while providing primary care services in a medically underserved community. Students gain an appreciation of how Community Based Primary Care is different from hospital based secondary or tertiary care. They understand the important role of psychosocial factors and other determinants of health in a patient’s health and illness. They learn the role of multi-disciplinary teams in providing care for patients. During this time students are also introduced to some of the basic clinical skills including doing vitals, the components of a basic medical history and physical examination. |
