community-based participatory research
Historically, communities of color have been targets of research, only to ultimately lack access to data collected from researchers, and denied participation to have sovereignty over how that data is translated into systemic change to advocate for their needs.
CBPR is a research model that aims to dismantle the elitist wall of historically-conventional research practices by working in partnership with communities. These grassroots partnerships aim to center resilient-powered communities of color with the tools to identify their own community needs, develop research tools to gather information, and analyze this information to produce actionable interventions to address their needs. Over the years, we have made mistakes, we continue to learn and grow from the communities on how to do this process in a truly just way that goes beyond building partnerships to having the community control the process. Fellows learn some of the fundamentals of CBPR, HIPPAA, compliance, Human Subjects, data analyses and other essentials in conducting research. |
Most of the research has focused on conducting needs assessments among vulnerable populations and using the data to help local organizations and communities to improve health outcomes for its members. Some of these have included:
