TOGETHER WE RISE!
MENTORING GENERATIONS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCATES AND HEALERS
Summer Urban Health Fellowship is a pipeline program that brings together students at all levels of their educational journey in mentoring relationships. We are a community of fellows, friends, and supporters who believe that a different world is possible- a just world is possible, and that we can and will build that world together. We are about building a community of fellows united in a lifelong commitment to fighting social injustice that is so much the cause of ill health in our communities. It is about supporting each other and working together to dismantle oppressive structures while rebuilding a just and equitable world. Join our team! Join the Cause!
Over the past 32 years, medical students from across the country to come to Harbor-UCLA Department of Family Medicine to work alongside family medicine residents, undergraduates, and high school students in a community based project for 6 weeks during the summer. Working in teams, they learn about health care disparities and issues facing our underserved and marginalized communities. They learn the fundamentals of community based research, health policy, and advocacy, provide health education talks to the community, and plan and implement community health fairs. The project culminates in a formal summit where a health status report is presented to the community along with suggestions for improvement.
